Our annual Year 10 Camp to Torquay has become a key component of the Hallam Australian Rules Football Academy since its inception in 2009.
Earlier this Term, our students and staff, via a number of physical challenges and tailored Xtreme Adventure workshops were assessed on their initiative, teamwork, selflessness, mental concentration and leadership. Complimenting this was a workshop on Values from Ex SAS Operative and now Managing Director of Performance Precinct, Anthony Oliver.
By partnering with Xtreme Adventures and Performance Precinct as the external providers of the camp a unique experience is guaranteed.
Activities included:
- Surfing
- Beach Carnival
- Lawn Bowls
- Abseiling
- Leadership Workshops
- Conditioning & PT /Skill Sets
With the support of Mark Wheeler and Darren Flanigan from the Dandenong Stingrays, the boys were also mentored in what criteria the Under 16- 18 TAC System Coaches are seeking in their candidates. As well guest appearances from previous students who have been drafted through this program like Tom Gillies and Ryan Bastinac, the boys began to realise that their dreams of getting drafted can come true with enormous commitment and a willingness to work on their character as these draftees have previously done.
With high performance being highly sought across their whole participation and time in the program, the camp experience constantly reinforces the need for good character and perseverance. By doing activities such as abseiling off 30 metre walls there is a clear outcome in mind and that is to take the boys right out of their comfort zone and see how they respond as individuals and collectively. How they manage themselves in gnarly situations is observed and noted.
Obviously the coaching group is also seeking a partnership and team bond to form between the boys that will promote friendship and reliance on each other- both on the field and off the field as well as in the classroom at Hallam Senior College.
By the end of the three days the Training Camp provides the boys the awareness of what the Hallam Australian Rules Football Academy expects out of its candidates…
…Represent your school with pride both on and off the field and to take be fully committed and connected to Hallam Senior College Educational Experience.
